Philip Glass is the most famous composer in the United States, with a body of work that has forever changed the course of modern music. Among Glass’s greatest achievements is his trilogy of compositions for director Godfrey Reggio, beginning 30 years ago with Koyaanisqatsi, and continuing with 1988’s Powaqqatsi, followed by 2002’s Naqoyqatsi. Now the pair have teamed up once again for Reggio’s latest masterpiece VISITORS, which one highly regarded critic described as “a cinematic experience that is beyond words.”
Glass’s soundtrack to VISITORS is now available for streaming above (for a limited time). As Molly Yeh writes: “Glass and Reggio worked closely making this film, and the two components were made in tandem, rather than the music being scored to the image. Performed with sweeping elegance by the Bruckner Orchester Linz conducted by Dennis Russell Davies, the music is deliberate and poetic.”
Interview magazine recently published a fascinating interview with Philip Glass, in which the composer sat down for a series of questions with Bryce Dessner of the rock group The National. Dessner — an accomplished composer himself — also has a master’s degree in music from Yale University, and is currently a composer-in-residence at Muziekgebouw Eindhoven. On top of that, it was recently announced that Deutsche Grammophon/Universal Music Classics will release an album featuring three of Bryce Dessner’s orchestral works on March 4th, 2014.
