There are some amazing things happening at this year’s SXSW Film Festival in Austin this week, and the latest nugget comes from director Danny Boyle. Boyle is in Austin to promote his latest film Trance, and during an interview with Drew Taylor of The Playlist, Boyle dropped the bombshell that his anticipated sequel to Trainspotting is finally going to happen. Boyle revealed a likely shooting schedule somewhere around 2016, and he’s confident Ewan McGregor and the original cast will return to reprise their roles from the 1996 classic. Boyle’s longtime screenwriter John Hodge (Trance, Trainspotting, Shallow Grave, A Life Less Ordinary, The Beach) is already busy developing the storyline which will be loosely based on author Irvine Welsh‘s Trainspotting (1993) follow-up entitled Porno which was released in 2002. Boyle adds, “This has been a long time coming. There’s always been this long term plan for ‘Trainspotting 2’. If John can produce a decent enough script, I don’t think there will be any barriers to Ewan or any of the cast coming back. I think they’ll wanna know that the parts are good so they don’t feel like they are letting anyone down. The reason for doing it again is that people cherish the original, people remember it or have caught up with it if they never saw because they were younger. So you want to make sure you don’t disappoint people,” he continued. “That will be the only criteria I think.” You can read more by visiting The Playlist.
