A trip to the races is rarely a let-down. You don’t have to be an aficionado of the sport to get involved in the festivities. Whether it is horse racing or the dogs, the event provides the setting for a rambunctious social gathering and a decent opportunity to win some cash.
Greyhound racing does not provide the glamour of a day at the Grand National or Cheltenham Festival, although tickets are distinctly more affordable. One of the grandest stages of the sport is the Greyhound Derby at Towcester Racecourse. The most expensive tickets come in at £20, leaving plenty of cash for a beverage or two along with food. Few events in sports offer the experience and atmosphere at such a low cost – especially compared to the price of a football match.
The elite competitors descend upon Northamptonshire for the Grand Final after a series of preliminary rounds, bringing the class to the fore. If you’re a racing enthusiast or an amateur, it’s certainly worth at least one punt on the racing, with Williamhill offering a variety of goods on the meet, including 20/1 on favourite Droopys Expert. There are not many experiences that can match the roar of excited bettors when the dogs are released.
Towcester provides the perfect location for a lads’ getaway, with the dogs and Silverstone Circuit in the vicinity. A day at the racecourse can be followed with a night on the town. There are a number of bars that provide a unique experience, with the Towcester Mill Brewery offering their own brand of beers and ales. If beer and ale are not your drink then the Warner Edwards Gin Distillery caters to the spirit requirement. In the Northamptonshire region, there will be at least one brewery that delivers on your need – with over ten located in striking distance of the racecourse.

Although an indulgence on the fine alcohol may be tempting, it would take you out of the action for the other attractions in the region. Motor racing enthusiasts would dream of taking to the track at Silverstone, which can be arranged through their day-visit programme. The experiences can include putting you behind the wheel of a Formula One car or other luxury vehicles, featuring Aston Martins and Ferraris. Taking one of those cars around the famous track is certainly an occasion that cannot be passed up – prices begin £100-mark to take on the circuit yourself.
The Porsche Experience Centre is also available at the track as well. Again it offers a wide range of activities around their supercars, while your food and drink needs are also catered for in their facilities. Who knew a trip to Northamptonshire could be such a thrilling place for a racing nerd? If you’re looking for a weekend getaway with your mates – the area has the entertainment and nightlife needed for an exciting escape. If you play your cards right at the dogs at Towcester Racecourse, you may even come out of the weekend with extra cash in your pocket.
