Lately I’ve been seeing a surge in online popularity of various 3D animation tests — almost certainly due to the fact that VFX technology is expanding so rapidly. After all, it was only a few years ago when Pixar and Disney software engineers were able to develop technology that allowed their animators to create hair that moved in a believable way. Because of breakthroughs like this, animators and designers can now bring all sorts of exotic materials and textures to life in the most astonishing ways. Take the work of digital designer, Tobias Gremmler, for example. A few months ago he impressed us with his elaborate futurism-style movement visualization test of a kung fu athlete (watch below). Now he’s blowing us away with an incredible project involving the merging of New Media and Chinese opera costume design. You can watch it in full above. I’ve also attached some of my other favorite VFX animation tests below as well. To see all of Tobias’s work visit his Vimeo page, and his website at Syncon-D.com.
