At 90-years-young, Johanna Quaas (born November 20, 1925) is officially registered by the Guinness Book of World Records as the oldest gymnast in the world. The German nonagenarian athlete performed in her first gymnastics competition in 1934 and had a terrific career winning 11 medals in all. Then when she was 38 she married her husband and they spent the next several years raising their three daughters. When she was in her 50s she “picked it up again” and performed in her first post-motherhood competition when she was 56. In 2012 she appeared on the British morning show This Morning and you can watch her amazing routine above. If that’s not enough to motivate you to restart your abandoned gym routine then you can also watch the following profiles of: 96-year-old yoga teacher Tao Porchon-Lynch, the legendary 80-year-0ld “Ama” pearl divers of Japan, 78-year-old bodybuilder Ernestine Shepherd, 86-year-old marathon runner Joy Johnson, and 73-year-old fitness champion Stephen Jepson. And for added inspiration proving that life after 70 can be amazing, be sure to watch Judi Dench’s incredible interview with Charlie Rose below.
