Behind the root of almost every major technological advancement one often finds a simple little story that almost defies belief. How can a major tech breakthrough be born out of something so seemingly inconsequential? Easily, says Google CEO, Eric Schmidt. In a recent article for Project Syndicate, Schmidt tells the story of how back in 2000 when Google was still in its infancy the company still had quite a few kinks to work out when they were suddenly faced with the biggest search-demand challenge they had ever faced — and it happened instantly on the night of February 23, 2000. That was the night when Jennifer Lopez walked out on stage at the annual Grammy Awards wearing her iconic deep-plunging green Versace dress. “At the time, [the dress] was the most popular search query we had ever seen,” says Schmidt. But we had no surefire way of getting users exactly what they wanted: J. Lo wearing that dress. Google Image Search was born.”
