Last night 60 Minutes aired a disturbing report on the planet’s dwindling supply of groundwater. In areas suffering from unprecedented ongoing droughts, such as California, the surface water supply (i.e. rivers, lakes, streams, rainwater) is almost non-existent. The only choice is to tap into the groundwater table deep underground. Analogous to a savings account, once the groundwater is used up there’s really nothing left, and the groundwater itself can take decades or centuries to return. And that’s exactly what’s happening in many parts of the world. Some areas such as the Middle East are so depleted that U.S. intelligence warns these zones will likely succumb to “state failure” within 10 years. But among the most revealing portions of the report is what NASA’s GRACE™ satellites have discovered. You can watch the full story above.
