A Hollywood casting director could also be described as a “chemistry director”.  Their fundamental importance is not only to assemble the most talented actors for each role in the film, but also to carefully assemble a cast with great chemistry.  In a fascinating new interview, casting director Marci Liroff describes the process of finding the little boy who would play Elliott in Steven Spielberg’s E.T. The Extra Terrestrial (1982).  It almost seems unimaginable that anyone other than Henry Thomas could have pulled off that role, but watch as Liroff tells the story of how they found him.
