Richard Linklater has spent the last 12 years making his newest film, Boyhood, and the impressive cast has been along for the whole ride.  Front and centre is actor Ellar Coltrane who was seven-years-old when he began filming the role of the young boy.  The film tracks the life of a young boy (Coltrane) as how his relationship with his parents (Ethan Hawke and Patricia Arquette) evolves from his time in 1st grade up to his entering young adulthood.

In 2013 Ethan Hawke said in an interview: “also known as ‘The Twelve Year Project’; Richard Linklater and I have made a short film every year for the last 11 years, one more to go, that follows the development of a young boy from age 6 to 18.  I play the father, and it’s Tolstoy-esque in scope.  I thought the ‘Before’ series was the most unique thing I would ever be a part of, but Rick has engaged me in something even more strange.  Doing a scene with a young boy at the age of 7 when he talks about why do raccoons die, and at the age of 12 when he talks about video games, and 17 when he asks me about girls, and have it be the same actor — to watch his voice and body morph — it’s a little bit like timelapse photography of a human being.  Next year, he will graduate high school and we will finish the film.  It will probably come out in two years.”

Linklater took home the Best Director prize at this year’s Berlin Film Fesival.  Boyhood is set for release on July 11, 2014.  By the way, the song you’re about to fall in love with from this trailer is entitled “Hero” from the group Family Of The Year.  It’s off their album Loma Vista which you can pick up on iTunes.  You can watch the official music video HERE.
