What happens when you combine 10 acres on a Joshua Tree National Park hillside, an artist couple with a whack of disposable cash, and a renowned architect with a dramatic sense of imaginative style? You get the following jaw-dropping home designed by uber-organic architect Kendrick Bangs Kellogg that looks like it would be perfect for Lex Luthor himself.
Back in the late 1980s, artist Beverly Doolittle and her hubby Jay wanted to build a home in the iconic desert roughly 2-hours east of Los Angeles. They wrote Kellogg personally with a note that included: “[We] recently purchased a very interesting, though unconventional, building site in the Californian desert.” It didn’t take long for Kellogg to reply: “Yes, I am interested in your project,” and the rest is history. On his first site visit, Doolittle says Kellogg was hopping from rock to rock like a boy having the time of his life. Kellogg was almost certainly having a great time, but he was also searching for sturdy enough desert-baked boulders in which to anchor the house to its foundation. A total of 26 columns support the blade-like roof lines, and board-form concrete walls envelop the 4,643-square-foot to protect it from the desert winds.
As emotional as it is to part with, Beverly and Doolittle are downsizing and moving to Utah, so the stunning home is now for sale for a cool $3 million. The home is mere minutes away from Palm Springs as well as Coachella and its famed annual music festival.
