The reviews for Woody Allen‘s upcoming film Blue Jasmine are pouring in and they’re overwhelmingly positive. Starring Cate Blanchett, Alec Baldwin and Sally Hawkins, Blue Jasmine tells the story of Jasmine (Blanchett) who heads to San Francisco following a life crisis, where she reconnects with her sister (Hawkins). All of the glowing reviews highlight the fact that this film is anchored on a powerhouse performance by Cate Blanchett.
Rodrigo Perez of The Playlist writes: “It’s part raw and ugly character study, part ensemble comedy, but it’s that first element that is so striking, bold and unnerving, while the latter element is sometimes amusing, but familiar. ‘She’s Cate Blanchett, what can you do? You hire her and get out of the way,’ Allen said in a recent interview and it’s with this statement one starts to believe in the hands of another actress, ‘Blue Jasmine,’ could have been a much lighter, breezier affair overall (in the same interview Blanchett suggests she was given little direction and left to her own devices, which is Allen’s modus operandi).” Adding to the critical acclaim is Justin Chang of VARIETY who writes: “Blanchett’s performance is so dominant in terms of screentime and emotional impact that the film succeeds as not only a virtuoso ensemble piece, but also an unflinchingly intimate study of the character in the title.”
Woody Allen’s Blue Jasmine opens in limited release in North America on July 26th. And if this isn’t enough Woody Allen to whet your appetite, it was revealed this week that Allen’s next passion project is to write a film in which he can co-star with comedian Louis C.K.
