Nacho Figueras (born March 4, 1977 in Argentina), often called the “David Beckham of Polo,” recently sat down with the hosts of CBS This Morning to discuss his successful career, his recent injury, and his future in polo and modeling. Figueras currently plays for and is captain of BlackWatch, a team he co-owns with New York billionaire Neil Hirsch, which is sponsored by Ralph Lauren. Aside from his career as a polo player, Figueras is also the co-organizer and co-host of the annual Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic, which in years past he has co-hosted with the likes of Hugh Jackman and Clive Owen, and featuring appearances by such high profile players as Prince Harry.
Figueras is also one of the world’s most famous supermodels. When he was approached by famed photographer Bruce Weber 12 years ago, at a dinner party held by Kelly Klein, ex-wife of Calvin, in The Hamptons, he hoped modelling might help him buy more squirrelly mounts. “Then I realised that I could make extra money, and raise awareness of the sport.” Nacho started modelling for Ralph Lauren in 2000, eventually become the face of Ralph Lauren Black Label™ in 2005, and has been under contract since. In May 2009, he was made the face of the World of POLO™ fragrances, including POLO Black™, POLO Blue™ and POLO Modern Reserve™. Black Watch™ is also a label under the Ralph Lauren umbrella, offering tight polo shirts emblazoned with Nacho’s number 2, an idea of Figueras’ to make it a billion-dollar brand.
For this year’s match of the Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic, Figueras will co-host with Matthew McConaughey. According to People: “This year’s match will benefit McConaughey’s Just Keep Livin Foundation, a charity started by the actor and his wife Camilla to empower high school students to lead active lives, and Liberty Park, which was damaged in Superstorm Sandy last fall.” The Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic takes place on June 1, 2013 at Liberty State Park in New Jersey.
Figueras, who is consistently rated among the top 100 polo players in the world, is currently ranked #8 on the list of the world’s most iconic male supermodels. Nacho has been married to Delfina Blaquier, a photographer and former model, since 2004. The couple currently have 4 children, Hilario, Aurora, Artemio and baby Alba born January 19, 2013.
