Having come from a family of oldtime country music lovers I have always had a deep respect for the very best this genre has to offer. From George Jones and Charley Pride, to Ricky Skaggs and Conway Twitty, the history of country music’s greatest men is an impressive list indeed. In recent years, however, the genre has been eaten away from the inside out by the toxic introduction of pop which is doing untold damage to the purity of country music’s heart, soul, and DNA. Thanks to an emerging new crop of talent, the damage could very well be reversed.
Leading the fight is Daughn Gibson, whose album All Hell, released in April 2012, has made everyone stand up and take serious notice. The former trucker is one of the boldest new faces in the country field, and his brilliant fusion of gritty country and electronica (influenced by some of his personal favorite electronic artists such as Demdike Stare and Burial) stands out above the rest. One person who became instantly obsessed with Gibson’s new sound is visionary music video director Saam Farahmand (Alexander McQueen’s “Ghost”, Diane Kruger’s “Somebody To Love Me”), and Farahmand just launched a brand new video tribute to Daughn Gibson, starring none other than Daughn Gibson himself. Farahmand sat down with DAZED Digital to explain how the project came to be: “In 2012, Milo Cordell from Merok Records introduced me to Daughn’s music and I fell in love with songs from, ‘All Hell’. I couldn’t stop listening to it, and learning about him. I was obsessed with his backstory and his dark ballads, and as a concept and image he was the most exciting artist I had come across in a long time. He was like Marlon Brando, Henry Rollins, Lee Hazelwood and Jim Morrison, all at the same time. I was in LA and I just contacted Daughn to ask him if I could make a video for his music, a kind of portrait interpretation.”
