Earlier this week, legendary Italian carmaker Lamborghini unveiled its stunning new Veneno supercar at the Geneva Auto Show in Switzerland, and fans were not disappointed.  Coming in at a whopping price tag of $3.9 million, the Veneno is one of the most expensive cars in history — possibly the most expensive.

Much of the car’s expense comes from its carbon fiber monocoque construction, with the rest attributed to its “6.5-liter, naturally aspirated V-12 engine, seven-speed automated manual transmission and permanent all-wheel drive, all of which help it accelerate from zero to 60 in 2.8 seconds and hit a top speed approaching 220 miles an hour,” as TIME reports.  The exquisite supercar was created for Lamborghini’s 50th anniversary, and like the Aventador model on which it is based, and many previous Lamborghinis, the Veneno borrows its name from a famous Spanish fighting bull.  According to Lamborghini, the original Veneno gained notoriety nearly 100 years ago when the bull “fatally wounded the famous torero Jose Sanchez Rodriguez during a bullfight in the arena Sanlucar de Barrameda” in Andalusia in 1914.

Lamborghini’s logo still carries the imprint of a “raging bull” in contrast to Ferrari’s more civilized “prancing horse”.  Only 3 Venenos have been made, and they have each been sold.  They have been painted in red, green, and white as a symbolic gesture to the Italian flag.
