David Bowie’s upcoming album The Next Day hasn’t even been released yet, but critics are already unanimously hailing it as one of Bowie’s greatest masterpieces. The Daily Telegraph’s Neil McCormick describes it as “an absolute wonder: urgent, sharp-edged, bold, beautiful and baffling, an intellectually stimulating, emotionally charged, musically jagged, electric bolt through his own mythos and the mixed-up, celebrity-obsessed, war-torn world of the 21st century.” The Independent’s Andy Gill raves The Next Day is the “greatest comeback album in rock ‘n’ roll history.” And The Times‘ Will Hodgkinson says the new album sounds like “the Bowie so many of us grew up with; the Bowie that helped us make sense of the world.” The album’s first track “Where Are We Now?” was released a little while back, and today the second single “The Stars (Are Out Tonight)” gets a terrifically bizarro new video directed by Floria Sigismondi, and starring The Queen of FEELguide Tilda Swinton along with Bowie himself. FACT writes, “The pair play a docile couple tormented by a pair of phantasmagoric celebrity rockers. The antagonists bear a noticeable resemblance to various iterations of Bowie of yore, continuing ‘The Next Day’‘s obvious thematic fascination with looking back and growing older.” The Next Day is set for release on March 12th, but you can pre-order the album right now on iTunes.
