I just landed in Montreal a few short hours ago after a week of Christmas and family and dinners and dogs and screaming kids and a bed that’s not mine and believe it or not — I actually miss it. Each and every year my friends and I — and millions of others — seem to balk at the idea of being catapulted into such intense family energy, but upon our returns we spend the next week afterwards wishing we could go back. Family’s so peculiar that way. We can’t live with ’em, and can’t seem to be able to live without ’em. And we’d damn well do anything for ’em as well.
Such is the story in director Derek Cianfrance‘s new film The Place Beyond The Pines starring Ryan Gosling and Bradley Cooper. The Place Beyond The Pines took centre stage at this year’s TIFF last week, and was one of the most highly anticipated showings at the festival, and now it’s poised to make its theatrical debut. Ryan Gosling stars as Luke, a motorcycle stunt driver who finds out his casual fling with Romina (played by Eva Mendes) the year prior had led to a son. As Luke comes to terms with his new role as a father, he embarks on a dangerous journey towards bank robbery as a desperate way of providing for his boy.
The very first trailer arrived last week and it gives a terrific broad brushstroke of what we can expect from the film. The Place Beyond The Pines hits theaters on March 29, 2013. And if you haven’t yet seen director Derek Cianfrance’s previous film Blue Valentine then I really have no clue what the fuck you’re waiting for, because it’s one of the best damn films I’ve seen in years.
