I first learned of TRON: Legacy director Joseph Kosinki‘s sci-fi epic OBLIVION this past June when it was announced that M83 would be creating the soundtrack. Sounds like an a match made in heaven as far as I’m concerned, and it promises to be a huge event come next April.
Kosinski began writing his graphic novel entitled OBLIVION back in 2005 when he first moved to Los Angeles. In August 2010, Disney bought the rights to the work, and soon afterwards Tom Cruise and Academy Award-winner Melissa Leo (The Fighter) signed onto the project. The following is the synopsis: “Tom Cruise stars in ‘OBLIVION’, an original and groundbreaking cinematic event from the director of ‘TRON: Legacy’ and the producer of ‘Rise of the Planet of the Apes’. On a spectacular future Earth that has evolved beyond recognition, one man’s confrontation with the past will lead him on a journey of redemption and discovery as he battles to save mankind. Jack Harper (Cruise) is one of the last few drone repairmen stationed on Earth. Part of a massive operation to extract vital resources after decades of war with a terrifying threat known as the Scavs, Jack’s mission is nearly complete. Living and patrolling the breathtaking skies from thousands of feet above, his soaring existence is brought crashing down when he rescues a beautiful stranger from a downed spacecraft. Her arrival triggers a chain of events that forces him to question everything he knows and puts the fate of humanity in his hands.”
Next up is M. Night Shyamalan‘s AFTER EARTH, which came out of nowhere earlier this morning when The Playlist posted the trailer. Starring Will Smith and his son Jaden, the story opens with a father and son’s crash landing on a planet that was evacuated by humans 1,000 years earlier. Both films open less then two months apart from each other next year. OBLIVION arrives in IMAX theaters on April 12, 2013 and opens wide one week later on April 19, 2013. AFTER EARTH starring Will Smith opens on June 7, 2013.
