Early Wednesday morning a beachcomber was walking along Pompano Beach (roughly 30 miles north of Miami’s South Beach) when he came across a giant eyeball that had washed ashore. Officials with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission were immediately brought in to decipher which species of creature the softball-sized eye ball belongs to, but so far the answer remains elusive. Carli Segelson, a spokeswoman for the commission, told NBC NEWS that tons of inquiries have flooded into their office ever since a photo of “The Mysterious Eyeball” was posted on their Facebook page. “It’s just gone viral,” she said. There are more pictures in the commission’s Flickr photo gallery. The majority of guesses are that it belongs to a giant fish, a giant squid, or a whale. “The primary suspect right now is that it would be a large fish,” Segelson told NBC NEWS. Among the possibilities are a swordfish, or a tuna, or some sort of deep-water fish species. Genetic testing at the Fish and Wildlife Research Institute in St. Petersburg will reveal the answer in the coming days.
