It’s been six years since her 2006 album The Greatest, and now CAT POWER (a.k.a. Chan Marshall) is back and she’s better than ever with her brand new album Sun which is set for release on September 4th. CAT POWER’s fans who’ve grown accustomed to her rainy day themes and style through the years will be the most shocked by her surprisingly thrilling new sound. The transition comes after a rough six years for the singer.
After releasing The Greatest, Marshall was ravaged by debt, declared bankruptcy, and was even hospitalized for stress. When she finally gathered the strength to begin creating music again, a close friend of hers felt the songs were far too sad and familiar. So Marshall scrapped everything and started over from scratch. She underwent a deep reevaluation of her direction, replacing her melancholic sound with bright synths, drum machines, and beautifully layered vocals. She describes Sun as her “rebirth”, and the album is getting rave reviews including NPR which writes, “It’s a bold, sometimes epic and thrilling sound Marshall crafted and produced entirely on her own, playing every instrument and singing every part at her Malibu studio … the album is also likely to draw in a new batch of fans struck by its power and triumphant beauty … it’s one of 2012’s biggest surprises and best records: an irresistible collection from an inspired, fearless and curious artist.”
