One film getting some of the biggest early Oscar buzz is Paul Thomas Anderson‘s 1950s drama THE MASTER. Starring Joaquin Phoenix as “lost soul” Freddie Sutton, he is taken under the wing of Lancaster Dodd (Philip Seymour Hoffman) and his faith-based cult. The film is widely regarded as a brilliant take down of Scientology, the dipshit freaks who run it (Hoffman’s portrayal of Dodd is all but a carbon copy of Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard), and the weak individuals who fall into its darkness. The film is set to premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival this September, and open in North America on October 12th in 65mm.
