Oprah’s life partner, Stedman Graham, recently sat down with Charlie Rose to talk about his latest book IDENTITY: Your Passport To Success, where he lays out his 9-step process for unlocking the ocean of potential that lies within each one of us. The most critical element for anyone’s journey toward success is as simple as it is challenging: discover your own identity — not the one that has been given to you by others. In other words, in order to become truly alive and unleash your maximum purpose and potential, it is essential to know your passion and what it is you love. This is non-negotiable. With this passion in your hand, you instantly have your geomagnetic north. Without it, your compass is useless.
A cynic might scoff at the self-helpy tone of Graham’s words, but over the past year especially, I have developed a deep revulsion for cynicism which is coupled with a renewed fascination by messages such as the one Graham’s presents in this book and interview. The concept laid out by Graham here is as elegant as it is powerful, and connects to two of the biggest pillars of my own personal belief structure: 1) The Universal Law of Attraction; and 2) Joseph Campbell’s ideology of following your bliss, “When you follow your bliss, doors will open where you would not have thought there would be doors; and where there wouldn’t be a door for anyone else.” My definition of “success” is to take this passion/bliss (coupled with knowing your identity), feed and nurture it with education and knowledge, and watch it transform into a world of possibilities, happiness, discovery, and as much love as humanly possible. If that’s not the meaning of life then I have no idea what is.
