NO FEAR OF POP just gave me the heads up to this icy-yet-heartwarming track from New Zealand’s Birds Of Passage, an experimental music project from the amazingness that is Alicia Merz. The track is called “Away With The Night” and it’s from her exceptional new sophomore album entitled Winter Lady (listen to the track below as well as “Highwaymen In Midnight Masks”). I just took a quick flight through Lady and the entire album is simply divine (and I never use the word “divine”). Scratch that: Winter Lady is not just divine, it’s diviiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiine. No joke. In their review of the album, NFOP writes: “[Winter Lady] is a quiet masterpiece of minimalistic, indeed very wintry and otherworldly musings that are carried by Merz’s eerie, reverberated voice, sparsely accompanied by piano and cello, almost indiscernible field recordings and slow, cold drones, evoking images of snow-covered landscapes that are undoubtedly beautiful but leave a feeling of loneliness and loss.” If you’re into this whole cassette tape renaissance, Birds Of Passage just released Winter Lady on your favorite old technology and you can pick up your own copy via Bathetic.
