This past weekend I was going through a book of my sister’s which chronicled the history of Lake Clear, a stunning crystal blue lake located in the heart of eastern Ontario where I grew up (visit LakeClear.org for more information). The book contained the most incredible pictures of not only the beaches and islands where I spent so much time in the country sun as a young boy, but also the achingly beautiful rustic cottages that dotted the lake’s edge. For the past couple days my mind has been flooded with dreams of what my own lakefront cottage might look like some day, and I have a feeling my these dreams will be forever influenced by this Montauk home I just discovered this morning.
Located in Montauk, New York (near the eastern tip of Long Island approximately half way between Manhattan and Cape Cod), this jaw-dropping lakefront compound consists of a 4,500-square-foot main house with a 50-foot lap pool, an 1800-square-foot 3-bedroom guest house, as well as a barn. The residence was designed by Robert Young Architects and the anonymous client’s wish was for a home that could accommodate a growing family and a group of close-knit friends. To disguise the bulk of the large building, the massing of the design is comprised of a series of smaller, informal living spaces which contain a carefully considered array of sight lines and experiences. Each of the structures centers on a great room which opens to the northern water views as well as the southern sun and breezes. The estate nestles perfectly with its surroundings via its use of the local gabled vernacular as well as the trademark cedar shingles and white-painted wood. The interiors are highlighted by painted pine board walls, exposed structure, gray-painted pine floors, and driftwood-clad storage elements which combine with the broad expanses of glass to create a seamless machine of life and memory.
