When it was released wide in North America in the fall of 2010, in no time at all, I Am Love captivated the hearts of millions. The film was took eleven years to bring to the screen, and was a labor of love collaboration between Tilda Swinton and director Luca Guadagnino, telling the story of Emma Recchi (played by Tilda Swinton), a Russian-born woman who marries into a wealthy Milanese textile dynasty. She and husband Edoardo Recchi Jr. (played by Flavio Parenti) raise three children over the course of nearly 25 years, until Emma falls madly in love with her son’s friend. A powerful and dramatic study of the force of unconditional love, the film carries an uncompromising message that as we age, and thereby as we develop a deeper understanding of who we truly are, our most important obligation is to be honest with ourselves about what we truly want and need in our lives. For those of you who have not yet seen I Am Love, I am unabashedly jealous — if you love this film as much as I did, then the memory of seeing it for the first time is something you will never forget.
