I’m stealing Snagglepuss’s famous catchphrase, Heavens to Murgatroyd! to adequately sum up what I’m feeling after perusing the recently announced category winners of this year’s International Photography Awards.  The IPA receives an obscene amount of entries each year, so the task of choosing the winners in each of the more than 100 categories must be a grueling task (the 48-member jury for the IPA consists of a broad spectrum of gallerists, photo editors and directors, art collectors, and other photography luminaries, and you can read the bios of each of them by CLICKING HERE).

I counted a total of 115 categories which each have their own batch of 1st/2nd/3rd place winners (i.e. “EDITORIAL: Political – NonPro”, “ADVERTISING: Beauty – NonPro”, “PEOPLE: Lifestyle – Pro”, etc.). The jury then narrowed down the field by picking their favorite first place winners as finalists for each of the broader genres which resulted in a total of 17 winners.  These 17 finalists are now moving on to compete for the ultimate prize of the IPA: the International Photographer Of The Year.  The winner will be announced at the annual Lucie Awards which is being held at Lincoln Center in New York on October 24, 2011.  The winner will earn the esteemed Lucie statuette and a cash prize of $10,000.  I will keep you posted on the results.

I’ve attached a few of my favorites below, but to see the full gallery of winners be sure to visit the website of the International Photography Awards.   Amazingness.
