FORA just released this incredible clip of renowned writer Joyce Carol Oates, one of the most preeminent writers in the world, reading from her novel The Gravedigger’s Daughter. I watched it last night and I cannot wait to read it now for myself, because not only am I intrigued by the story (the heartbreaking tale of a Jewish family escaping the Nazi regime and building a new life near Buffalo, New York in 1936), but I am completely captivated by Joyce herself — a woman who has reached a level of acclaim held by only a handful of living writers. Her legendary status adds such gravity to every word that comes out of her mouth that I was completely mesmerized by her reading from her own work, and by the fascinating question/answer period that follows. The pearls of wisdom and insight that she provides (especially in the Q&A) were so profound to me that it managed to open doors in my mind that haven’t been opened in quite some time, and could very well open the same doors for you. I highly encourage you to devote the 51-minutes required for this viewing, because it is worth every second. Joyce Carol Oates is officially my newest obsession, and she may very well be yours soon as well.
