I just finished watching this short film entitled “Water” by Corrie Jones. It deals with the struggles of an 8-year-old boy and his relationship with his mentally disabled father and his father’s brother who is a 24-hour caregiver. As I watched it I thought about how this child was being robbed of his carefree years, and all the attention that his uncle was giving his dad should instead be given to him. I can’t even begin to imagine the challenges involved in caring for a loved one who is mentally disabled and the questions, thoughts, and doubts that must go through one’s mind in a household like this. But when all is said and done, and we eventually meet our maker, we will each be forced to look back on our lives and do the self-analysis of how we have lived and loved. And as difficult of a time as this young boy, his father, and his uncle will have, they most certainly will come out of the experience with a much bigger understanding of the meaning of love than most everyone else in our world.
“Water” has been nominated for, and won, several awards at various film festivals around the world.
