Like many Canadians, I feel the added bonus at this time of the year of living next to the United States because, by proxy, it’s a second opportunity to celebrate Thanksgiving.  Us Canucks got to celebrate it last month on the long weekend of Monday October 8th, and this weekend it’s the Yanks’ turn.  I noticed today that a lot of friends south of the border began a wave of gratitude-based Facebook status updates which got me to thinking of what it is I’m thankful for right now.  So earlier this afternoon, one of the first things that came to mind is the fact that Canada was the first country in all of the Americas to legalize gay marriage across the entire country all the way back on July 20, 2005 (read more about the landmark ruling by CLICKING HERE) — the first in the Americas, and the fourth in the entire world to do so.  It was a huge day for gay rights, common sense, and champions of equality, but unfortunately not every country is so fortunate.  I came across this short clip today of Judge Judy Sheindlin‘s appearance on a 2009 episode of Larry King Live around the same time when the Proposition 8 ruling in California outlawed gay marriage, and Judy’s words further cemented my love and admiration for her.  Maybe this crystal clear logic from Judge Judy can help cast some light and common sense into those less fortunate parts of the world where the wheels of justice are still spinning in the mud.
