Janet Hanson is the costume designer for artists such as Daft Punk, M.I.A., Kanye West and others. She is also the founder and Chief Fashion Engineer at Enlighted Designs, and recently the folks at Motherboard.tv paid her a visit in her San Diego studio to find out how she manages to secure all these once-in-a-lifetime design contracts. Believe it or not, her theory is that if she listens to an artist’s music enough they will eventually contact her (although I must point out that I have listened to countless hours of Daft Punk’s music and they have never once called me). The Creators Project recently profiled Motherboard’s visit to Hanson’s studio in their weekly “Instructables How-To” segment, where you will learn Hanson’s technique for adding EL wire to any item of clothing you desire. Her first recommendation is to choose an item of clothing that is made of a stiffer material such as leather, suede, denim, or a heavyweight fabric that cannot stretch. The next items you will need are the following: clear thread, EL wire (single color or a mix of colors), an EL wire driver/inverter, battery holder, switch, soldering iron, solder, wire strippers, heat-shrinking tubing, and a heat gun. I give up already, but if you have the energy and passion to follow the remaining steps simply CLICK HERE.
